An easy way to update your strategy knowledge

The book presents an excellent companion of the top issues involving strategy today. The book is structured according to global themes, like strategy and economics, strategy and leadership, and so on. Each chapter has 4 or 5 articles related, written by authors from important business schools. Issues like game theory and commitments are deeply reviewed, but in a simple way, easy to understand, thus allowing anyone with no MBA to understand it. The book offers an easy way to update your strategy knowledge, if your are interested in business strategy.

Bravo!

Editors at Financial Times (FT) co-authored this volume, with Tim Dickson serving as executive editor . It offers "The Complete MBA Companion in Strategy," the result of FT's strategic alliance with the University of Chicago Business School, INSEAD, the University of Michigan Business School, and the Said Business School at Oxford University. This is the seventh volume in what is identified as "The Financial Times Mastering" series. It contains articles that first appeared in FT in late-1999.
The material is carefully organized within 16 chapters. In the first, there are two essays: "Strategy and the delusion of Grand Designs" authored by John Kay, Director of london Economics; the second -- "Strategy, blind men and the elephant" was co-authored by Henry Mintzberg of McGill University and INSEAD, Bruce Ahlstrand of Trent University (Ontario), and Joseph Lampel of the University of Nottingham Business School.
As for the final chapter, "Fresh Challenges for the Future," it was written by Dan Schendel, founding and current editor the Strategic Management Journal. The reader is advised that "This final module sums up the main themes of the book, addresses some of the current controversies, and offers pointers on how the field may develop in coming years. The core message is that those who fail to keep up with the best in strategic management risk losing their businesses and losing their jobs. The cases of failure cited throughout the book underline the point." My own crystal ball imploded long ago so I now cut Schendel considerable slack, given the fact that his comments on "fresh challenges" were composed five years ago. In fact, I think his analysis holds up remarkably well.
Although exceptionally well-written and skillfully-edited, this volume is by no means an "easy read." My own opinion is that it will be of greatest interest and benefit to the more capable students enrolled in graduate schools of business, and, to senior-level executives. Of course, the immediate value of each chapter will be largely determined by the immediate needs and interests of each reader. I would be remiss if I failed to acknowledge the superb graphics provided by Graham Parish. I also want to commend, again, Tim Dickson and his associates -- notably Ken Pottinger, James Pickford, Laura Scanga, and various school "co-ordinators" -- for pulling together so much excellent material, then getting it all properly presented. Bravo!

Part II and III could also be used to support students preparing for the TOEFL, TOEIC, GRE and IELTS tests. The book includes over 4,000 academic words translated from Portuguese to English.

This book draws heavily on some of the best practices of applied linguistics, more specifically, the fields of English for Academic Purposes and English as a Second Language (ESL). However, in contrast to popular ESL books that address a wide variety of grammar errors, this book focuses exclusively on typical errors made by Portuguese-speaking authors, with examples derived from Brazilian research papers. After revising over 1,000 research papers, various books, review articles, dissertations, and more than 200 abstracts written in English by Portuguese speakers, I have isolated and identified commonly reoccurring errors made by Brazilian authors writing in English. Most of the exercises of this book are designed to address these trouble spots, which are often the result of literally translating from Portuguese to English (tradu��o ao p�-da-letra).

This book can be used by students from a wide variety of fields of study with examples from a wide variety of research papers on a wide range of topics from Brazilian research. You can use the book alone, in a group of colleagues or with a teacher in a class.

Great book for Brazilian authors

I must confess that for a long time I have wished someone would write this book. I review a lot of papers written by my fellow Brazilians and I have compiled a list of my own with the recurrent mistakes I see in them. And I was happy to see that the author has nailed most of them.

Obrigada, Jim, for writing this book and then revising the previous version, which had a number of annoying typos. The book has helped me spot mistakes I make and the mistakes made by other Brazilian authors. Additionally, it has a number of exercises that help solidify what we learn. Unlike other books on how to write science papers, the prose is interesting, humorous sometimes, and keeps the readers' attention. I was hooked from beginning to end.

I really recommend this "Handbook for Brazilian Authors" for a number of reasons. First, it gives a number of examples of typical grammar mistakes we Brazilians make and shows where they come from (for instance, the tendency to use the expression "along the time", which comes from the direct translation "ao longo do tempo"; incorrect use of prepositions from direct translation etc); second, it contains tips on how to shorten a text, how to be concise, precise and how to make sure that it is clear in the text "who did what". These, and other recurrent mistakes that have to do with the structure of one's mother tongue and direct translations of it are easy to avoid, if only we are made aware of them.

In summary, please read this book and study it carefully before submitting your paper for publication. It will cut your costs with language reviews and will make your contribution more understandable to your peers.

Useful and handy

James' book is clear, simple to follow and has a lot of tips for Brazilian authors. The book is full with exercises and has a lot of information that goes beyond English and the writing style, as it also contains important information about each section of the research paper and its specific style. A very helpful tool for technical science writing in English

This book is written in a very clear way which makes it very easy for Portuguese speakers to follow and use. The author guides the reader in detail through each section of a paper or grant giving plenty of examples of common mistakes made during technical writing, in particular the ones made by Portuguese speakers. I find this book not only essential for Brazilian and Portuguese authors but a great tool for anyone who needs to write scientific manuscripts in English.

Translator and editor Morris, a visiting scholar in German studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, found Grunbaum's unpublished autobiography at the Institute of Austrian Resistance in Vienna when she was researching Jewish women who emigrated to Brazil in the Nazi era. Grunbaum was a German Jew living in Belgrade when the war broke out. Her husband was killed, and she was forced to escape through the Balkans to a temporary haven in Albania until she eventually reached Italy and then later Brazil. Along her journey, Grunbaum encountered severe obstacles, including partisans, thieves, fascists, the risks of being a female traveling alone, poverty, and hunger. What makes this memoir compelling is the author's courage in dealing with ethnic hatred. She vividly portrays all ethnic groups, including the Serbs and Muslims who gave her assistance. Her autobiography is unique because it shows a brutal and complex part of wartime Europe which little has been written. Recommended for larger libraries.

Alone in Albania

This is a fascinating account of the successful attempt of a Jewess to escape the clutches of the Nazis and thereby escape ending up as another victim of the Holocaust. Although survivors of this tragedy have written numerous accounts of their adventures, this one intrigued me because most of it is set in the Balkans.

Irene Eskenazi (later Gr�nbaum) was living in Belgrade when the Germans invaded in 1941. She and her husband, Bobby, tore off their yellow stars, and fled to Skopje in Macedonia, where life soon began to become dangerous for them and the many other Jews who had also fled there. News reaches Irene and her husband that the deportation of Jews to destinations unknown was imminent. Bobby persuades Irene to disguise herself as a Moslem Albanian peasant woman, and entrusts her to the care of an Albanian who has agreed to guide her across the border to Albania.

From the moment that Irene leaves Skopje, the story becomes more interesting, not only for her but especially for the reader. We are thrust into the intimate world of the poor Albanian peasants, a world not often described first hand by outsiders. In addition, Irene's descriptions of life in Axis occupied Albania provide a revealing insight into the infrequently described occupation of this obscure corner of the Balkans.

Through her canny ability to make use of numerous lucky breaks, and at times 'chutzpah', Irene survives the war in Albania, and eventually makes her way to Italy, and what she hopes will be freedom. Liberated Rome, with its active Black Market, is not only full of opportunities but also fraught with dangers for Irene. She describes these as vividly as she does her experiences in Albania.

I enjoyed reading this book not only because it increased my knowledge of the Balkans, an area that has always interested me, but also because it illustrates how grim determination can overcome seemingly unfavourable odds.

About the Author
Abdel Bari Atwan is a Palestinian writer and journalist. He was the editor in chief at the London-based daily al-Quds al-Arabi for twenty-five years and now edits the Rai al-Youm news website—the Arab world's first Huffington Post–style outlet. He is a regular contributor to a number of publications, including the Guardian and the Scottish Herald, and he is a frequent guest on radio and television, often appearing on the BBC's Dateline London.

Atwan interviewed Osama bin Laden twice in the late 1990s and has cultivated uniquely well-placed sources within the various branches of al Qaeda and other jihadi groups, including IS, over the last twenty years. The Best Book on the Islamic State

With the appearance of the Islamic State (or ISIS, ISIL, IS, ISI, or Deash) — this is how they want to be known and this is how the author refers to them — there have been a plethora of books on the subject. These books cover the political spectrum, and they vary greatly in informational value.

This is the best book on the Islamist State for one reason: It strives to be, and largely succeeds in being, one of the most objective accounts of this group.

The Islamic State is a digital caliphate. What sets them apart from other terrorist groups is their technological know-how. They skillfully navigate the back channels of the dark internet to recruit soldiers, obtain financing, move money, conduct cyber-intelligence, or hack internet or bank accounts. Without the internet, Atwan tells us, the Islamic State could not exist.

This book introduces us to the shadowy world of international terrorism and crime and is more powerful than any book of fiction. The IS has media savvy and an incredible technological knowledge of the internet. They know how to propagate their views to produce the greatest effect to the largest number of people. The immolation of the Jordanian airpilot was a good example. The brutality of the airman’s death shocked both the Western and Islamic world and was their way of saying using shock and awe methods that they are in the Middle East to stay.

While the subtitle indicates that they are the digital caliphate, a good part of the book, perhaps one third, concerns the origins of the Islamic State. Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that the United States is responsible for creating the IS when it completely destabilized Iraq following its invasion. According to Atwan this is only partially correct. Other factors such as the civil war in Syria and internal strive within Muslim jihadists contributed to the birth of IS.

The main promoter of the Islamic State, the author tells us, is our most intimate, stable, ally in the Middle East, Saudi Arabia, who consistently and regularly funnels millions of dollars, not only to the IS, but to other terrorist groups.

This book contains real information. The Islamic State has displayed a savagery, ferocity, and brutality that has shocked both the West and the Middle East. But the Islamic State is not just an ad-hoc bunch of unruly thugs. For all intents and purposes, the Islamic State is a de facto nation state. The territory under IS control covers the area greater than that of Great Britain and over 9 million people. It issues its own currency; it revived the monetary unit of the Mediaeval Caliphate, the golden dinar. It issues passports; requires vehicles within its territory to display Islamic State license plates; has its own flag, and coat of arms. Islamic State soldiers even have their own salute; ironically, it is the same salute Sasha Baron Cohen’s character used in The Dictator — the right index finger pointing upwards. The IS areas have a working postal system and a functional governmental and judicial system.

It has a treasury with millions and millions of dollars. Widespread news accounts indicated that when IS besieged Mosul, the Iraqi national troops fled and left an enormous cache of cash, one-half billion — that’s a “b” — dollars, and military equipment. Atwan relates that this year the IS published its first annual budget: $2 billion.

Areas under IS control have a functional governmental It is particularly ironic that in an area of incredible internal instability, law and order reign — if not under the constant threat and implementation of Sharia law — in areas controlled by the Islamic State. IS has taken control of oil fields and sell the oil on the open market, collecting the revenues from the confiscated fields.

This book is helpful even for news junkies such as this reviewer, to explain the dire situation in the Middle East and clarify the sometimes confusing inter-connections between the terrorist groups.

The author coherently explains what is going on with the highly organized and well-funded Islamist State and how it contrasts with the efforts of Al Quaeda which revolved mostly around the leadership of one man, Osama Bin Laden. The author gives great background on why this region has coalesced against the West in a determination to restore self-rule under the 18th Century puritanical ideology of Wahabism, and why they are utilizing savagery to gain recruits, adherents and to spread fear in an effort to sabotage economies in regions heavily subsidized by tourism. He also gives excellent advice on what is needed to restore a semblance of civility in what has more and more been recognized as essentially a civil war between Sunni and the Shiite religious authority. It is not through invasion, occupation and force of arms, but through education, and an understanding of the region's diversity of religious groups and how to assist them in living together as is done in the West, that will ultimately bring a sense of stability to this region. The use of social media which is instantaneous and easily accessed is now uniting adherents of an Islamic state, and the visceral imagery of terrorist attacks helps to spread their message of fear and intolerance.

This is close to a must-read, an excellent and scary account of a wily and formidable movement.

This is a difficult book to evaluate because the author, a well known journalist, has drawn a vast amount of information from many informants via interviews and internet contacts, but does not name them because of extreme danger to the informants. So, crediting the book depends on the reader's trust in the author. It rings true to me.

The book should scare hell out of most readers. Islamic State (this is the way Atwan refers to it) is well-organized, well-financed, ruthless and has generated commitment and loyalty from Muslims from all over the world. Al-Baghdadi, the leader and self-proclaimed Caliph has been accepted as that by sizable numbers of people. He is, if Atwan is correct, charismatic, smart and ruthless, and as able at leadership as he is at theology. Islamic State is fare more dangerous than previous terror groups. Now, about that word "terror." Terror is a method, not an end in itself; these people are not nihilists who love violence for violence's sake. Violence generates attention in world media, vast publicity and contributes to the reputation of formidable ferocity. Islamic State is a state, controlling 240,000 square miles and 6 million people, issuing license plates, having its own coinage and an extremely sophisticated internet presence. The vision is plain, to recreate the glory days of the original Caliphate which ruled from Spain to Central Asia; and Mecca and Medina are on the list. This is ambitious, and terror is a useful tactic.

Atwan's various chapters can be read on their own. He describes the background, including crucial information about the early Caliphate and 20th century history of Iraq. The initial chapters delineate the digital aspect, and do so extremely well; this is close to must-read. Islamic State appears to be holding its own in cyberspace and to represent extreme danger to operating systems for everything from drones to power grids. Other chapters detail the appeal to foreign fighters, women as well as men. There's a chapter describing governance within the state, and about al-Baghdadi himself
