Commentary on Romans

James Mongomery Boice is one of the best Bible Study writers I have come across, for the layman. He makes difficult topics simple and easy to understand. I have read this set of Romans, My husband did an indepth study over 2006. I purchaced a copy for my 20 year old grandson, at his request, who is attending a Christian University. It meets the needs of all ages in learning more about God's Word. Boice was an excellent writer. I have several of his commentaries and would highly recommend all of his works.

The Universalism Of The Gospel; The Particularism Of Grace

'It is unquestionably true that the Gospel is offered to all, but Christ speaks here of that secret and efficacious manner of teaching by which the children of God only are drawn to faith.' John Calvin, Commentary on John 17:3

Dr Boice was a Reformed preacher in the Calvinist vein, given to sound and faith-stirring exposition of God's holy Word. The Christian Charter is presented through Romans, and Dr Boice invested many years in laying before his flock the moral truths of God's law and the outworking of faith in Christ's atoning death as the satisfaction of God's righteous requirements. Theologians also refer to Romans as the foundational book in Paul's theology.

In Volume 2, p 927, Jim Boice introduces us to the Reformed concept of our great 'God's Effectual Call'. This is in every way beautifully explained and correctly related to the reader, invoking one to give God all the glory! Thanksgiving from a sinner, one undeserving of such grace!

"And those He predestined, He also called.." Romans 8:30

Dr Boice headlines the section: 'Calling: External And Internal'. He then fully explains how the external, audible call goes out to all, resulting in the universal call. It is in itself ineffective for salvation and may be resisted. There is scarcely an instance in the Bible where the terms are used to designate the indiscriminate overture of grace in the Gospel of Jesus Christ.' p 929, John Murray, as quoted from Redemption: Accomplished & Applied p 88.

Boice then goes on to explain how the inner call, the internal witness of the Holy Spirit, is effective in bringing conversion - a sinner to belief in Christ Jesus through regeneration. This understanding also infuses the utter conviction that it is grace irresistible, for whom God has predestined, He also then calls. More scriptural than that one cannot be.

Sexy soap opera of a read

First published in 1997, this is a real tv mini-series of a read. Only, if this had been made into a three parter it would have to have been either very heavily edited or shown way after the watershed - this story is stuffed full of graphic sex! A story of the fabulously wealthy, rich and powerful loaded with betrayals, counter betrayals, revenge and retribution – I was hooked! The characters, for the most part, are all gorgeous and randy as anything with the morals of alley cats – if Armani sold knickers with rip cords, they would wear them as they hopped their way from bed to bed to kitchen table.

The plot itself is way over the top, deliciously so in fact. It is pure escapism as it twists and turns. Every few pages I found myself gasping “I can’t believe he/she said/did that!”.

I really loved this sexy soap opera of a read – I think it appealed to the part of me that loves to watch programmes like Dallas and Revenge. Warning though – the sex is graphic and there is lots of it, so if that is not your cup of tea then you might find yourself skipping pages.

Thank goodness I've found a book by this author that I liked. I've read 3 other books by her on recs from other readers will not read any of hers again. Why not you say? Beacuse theyre all draaawwwnn out...so many supporting characters it's hard to figure out or keep it together. Lest we forget the endings of all her books are quite abrupt! Badda bing badda boom! So like I'm saying..wait! wait!..what the heck just happened? After you've read and read (her books are lengthy) it just ends folks! Never any epilogues, as I think author is exhausted in the end.
Back to this book. Again, many supporting characters and quite lengthy but it has some meats in it to keep you interested. I subtracted one star because AGAIN it ended abruptly. Yikes!

I am such a fan of Susan Lewis that she really can do no wrong in my eyes (except her two biographical books which was a bit of a let down). Wildfire did not dissappoint in the least.I love a story with a happy ending even if our heroine had been through many travails due to falling for the wrong man but Max was such a 'good catch'that it masde up for all her previous wrong choices.

A surprising number of recipes for dishes still made in modern times (omelettes, beignets, even pumpkin pie) are given. So important was this book that English cooks of the time immediately bought copies and one (anonymous) even translated it into English in the middle of the Puritan rule of Oliver Cromwell.

Very playable songbook

So...I'm not the worst piano player on the block but a lot of arrangement books I've bought were extremely difficult for me to play. This book is great. Of course I'm a big Krall fan but the way this is put together works for me. I like a moderate to difficult piano score with melody line and accurate cords then I mix and match as I play. These arrangement allow me to do that. You can start out simple and increase the difficultly as you learn the arrangement.

Great songbook for playing/singing Diana Krall's music!

I really enjoy playing music from this book. I am an alto singer who also loves to sing the old standards, and this music is perfect! The songs are written in the same keys and in the same manner that Diana Krall sings and plays them. This means however that I don't quite have the skill level to play some of the piano-only sections (which I call "embellishments"). These piano-only sections aren't necessary however if you just want to play and sing the basic songs without incorporating any embellishing. However the extra piano-only sections that I have managed to learn truly enhance the songs, as well as give me a good sense of accomplishment (oh, to be able to play the piano like her!).

I'm looking forward to purchasing more of her songbooks, and I hope they're all just as good as this one.

my favorite from Hesse

When I read about this book, way back when I read a lot of classics, the essay I read said this was Herman Hesse's least important book and the characters weren't"real". Curious, I read it in one sitting and loved it. Typical!
I saw this available on Kindle and thought I'd read it again and see if, like many books I read in my twenties, this one no longer pleased me. Surprise! Still like it a lot. Are the characters real? They are in the sense that people are still like this: they still do stupid things, feel sorry for themselves, fall in love with their best friend's girl, create music, don't understand their parents and commit suicide sometimes. And those real actions make them real enough for me.
If you don't mind a book without car chases, serial killers or sex give this a try.

Another great read from Hesse

Hesse is my favorite author. Each of his works has touched me in some way. My only regret is that I didn't start reading his books earlier in life. However, maybe I would not have appreciated them as much without a boat load of life experiences.
