The Internet Book explains how computers communicate, what the Internet is, how the Internet works, and what services the Internet offers you. It is designed for readers who do not have a strong technical background — early chapters clearly explain the terminology and concepts needed to understand all the services. When you finish reading, you will understand the technology behind the Internet, will appreciate how the Internet can be used, and discover why people find it so exciting. In addition, you will understand the origins of the Internet and see how rapidly it has grown.

Instead of using mathematics, algorithms, or computer programs, the book uses analogies from everyday life to explain technology. For example, to explain why digital communication is superior to analog, the text uses an analogy of sending signals through fog with a flashlight. To explain how audio can be played back for the user at a steady rate when packets arrive in clumps, the text uses the analogy of many gallons of milk arriving at a supermarket in one shipment, but being sold one gallon at a time.

In addition to explaining the services users encounter such as e-mail, file transfer, and web browsing, the text covers key networking concepts such as packet switching, Local Area Networks, protocol software, and domain names. More important, the text builds on fundamentals — it describes basic Internet communication facilities first, and then shows how the basic facilities are used to provide a variety of services. Finally, the book includes an extensive glossary of technical terms with easy-to-understand definitions; readers are encouraged to consult the glossary as they read.

The third edition retains the same general structure as the previous edition, but adds four new chapters and updates material throughout. Chapter 2 surveys a variety of Web sites, and encourages readers to begin exploring the Web while they read. The other three new chapters are especially significant. Chapter 14 covers Internet connection technologies, including ADSL and cable modems, technologies which are now available to consumers. Chapters 29 and 30 cover the related topics of security and ecommerce, both of which are increasingly important. Chapter 29 explains encryption technology, and Chapter 30 shows how the technology is used to conduct business.

As with the previous edition, the book is divided into four main parts. The first part begins with fundamental concepts such as digital and analog communication. It also introduces packet switching, and explains the Local Area Network technologies that are used in most businesses.

The second part of the book gives a short history of the Internet research project and the development of the Internet. Although most of the history can be skipped, readers should pay attention to the phenomenal growth rate, which demonstrates that the technology was designed incredibly well — no other communication technology has remained as unchanged through such rapid growth.

The third part of the book explains how the Internet works, including a description of the two fundamental protocols used by all services: the Internet Protocol (IP) and the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP). Although they omit technical details, the chapters in this part allow students to understand the essential role of each protocol and gain perspective on the overall design.

The fourth part of the book examines services available on the Internet. In addition to covering browsers, plugins, CGI, and search engines used with the World Wide Web, chapters discuss e-mail, network newsgroups, file and fax transfer, and audio and video communication. In each case, the text explains how the service operates and how it uses facilities in the underlying system.

The Internet Book makes an excellent reference text for a college-level course on the Internet. Although presented in a nontechnical manner, the material is scientifically accurate. More important, in the twenty-first century, an educated person will need to know more than how to use a browser or set up a Web page — they should have some understanding of what goes on behind the scenes. They can acquire such knowledge from this text.

Instructors are encouraged to combine classroom lectures with laboratory sessions in which students see and use the technology first-hand. In all courses, early labs should focus on exploring a variety of services, including sending e-mail, using a browser, using a search engine, downloading files via FTP, listening to audio, and using an IP telephone, if one is available. I encourage all students, even those who have no interest in computers, to build a trivial Web page by hand. In addition to helping them see the relationship between tags in an HTML document and the resulting display, it shows students how a server transfers files on a computer disk to a browser. Seeing the relationship in labs helps students better understand as they read about the underlying process.

Lab projects later in the semester depend on the type of course. Business-oriented courses often focus students on using the Internet — labs require students to search the Internet for information and then use the information to write a short paper. Other courses use labs to focus on tools such as programs used to create a Web page. Some courses combine both by having students search for information and then create a Web page that contains links to the information. In any case, we have found that students enter Internet courses with genuine enthusiasm and motivation; a professor's task is merely to provide perspective and remind students throughout the semester why the Internet is so exciting.

The Internet Book

The condition of the book was worse than it had been described. A profound crease was on the front cover of the book running the length of it and some pages have become unglued. I needed this book for my online MLS class. I like to keep my textbooks, but I'm not sure this one will make it through the class. Coverage of the subject of computers and the Internet is very thorough and why my professor chose this old book.

This book was required reading for an MBA class. The simplicity of the technical explanations, as well as the simple diagrams make it an easy book to understand. There are a few places where I wish the author would delve a bit deeper, on the topic of security as one example. Overall though, a good book for those who need a basic understanding of internet technology.

Church versus State

The confrontation between religious and secular values is one of the hottest issues that will confront the Supreme Court in the twenty-first century. Surprisingly, few Americans are schooled in the origins of the First Amendment and the thinking of James Madison, Thomas Jefferson, and other founding founders in including this clause as part of the Bill of Rights. A good portion of the volume discusses this extremely relevant topic. We learn that Madison was instrumental in the passage of the Establishment Clause. He saw it as a limitation on the power of Congress to coerce individuals to worship God in any manner inconsistent with their conscience, indeed to enact any law that involved religious topics.

The book continues its discussion of efforts to promote prayer and religious doctrine through government backing by examining leading 19th and 20th century Supreme Court cases. I learned that the celebrated liberal Justice William O. Douglas wrote opinions that weakened the wall of separation; he authored conservative decisions that called for the encouragement of religion by the state...(I expected the opposite). Every informed citizen probably should read this book to discover why the establishment clause is an essential pillar of American liberty.

Leaks in the Church/State Wall Are OK?

With attempts by our current President to allow federal funds to go to religious charities, a better understanding of the history and meaning of the First Amendment is desparately needed. One could hardly be better qualified to give us such an education than Leonard W. Levy in his book on the Establishment Clause.
In his book, Levy refutes the nonpreferentialists' claim that the First Amendment clause, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion," merely prohibits Congress from providing preferential aid to one church. If "an establishment of religion" meant only single-church establishments, Congress would only be prohibited from exclusively benefiting one church but not prohibited from aiding religion impartially. But, as Levy points out, history does not support the nonpreferentialists' interpretation.
Although the five southern colonies did have exclusive Anglical establishments, the colonies of New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Hampshire came to have multiple religious establishments, and, indeed, the colonies of Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New Jersey never had establishments of any kind. After the Revolution, opposition to establishments increased, resulting in states having to replace their exclusive or dual establishments or even ending their establishments altogether. Thus, the historical fact of multiple establishments of religion contradicts the nonpreferentialists' interpretation that "an establishment of religion" referred only to single-church establishments, and, therefore, does not support their claim that the establishment clause only prohibits Congress from making laws preferring one church. Nor is their interpretation supported by the debates between the Federalists and Anti-federalists.
Anti-federalists feared loss of liberty and pressured Federalists to accept recommendations for amendments to the new Constitution, which included protection of religious liberty. But Federalists countered that such amendments were superfluous because, as Levy succinctly restates the argument, "[T]he unamended Constitution vests no power over religion." Moreover, Madison stated in an October 17, 1788 letter to Jefferson that these amendments ought to be "so framed as not to imply powers not meant to be included in the enumeration." Thus, Levy concludes, "To argue, as the nonpreferentialists do, that the establishment clause should be construed to permit nondiscriminatory aid to religion leads to the impossible conclusion that the First Amendment added to the powers of Congress even though it was framed to restrict Congress. It is not only an impossible conclusion; it is ridiculous."
From his demolition of the nonpreferentialists' interpretation of the establishment clause and his statement in the Preface that his "sympathies are clearly with the separationists," one might conclude that Levy is a strict advocate of an impregnable wall of separation between church and state. However, he is not. Of zealous separationists who interpret every crack in the wall as disaster, Levy says, "[They are] like Chicken Little, screaming, 'The wall is falling, the wall is falling.' It really is not and will not, so long as it leaks just a little at the seams. If it did not leak a little, pressure on the wall might generate enough force to break it."
Examples of leaks which Levy feels need not be repaired are the Supreme Court beginning its sessions with "God save this honorable Court," the money motto "In God We Trust," the words "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance, tax-supported chaplains for military and legislative bodies, etc. Although Levy is aware of the concern of separationists that "big oaks grow from small acorns," he invokes for "trivial" leaks an aphorism which was also advocated by Madison: "De minimis non curat lex" ("The law does not bother with trifles"). A more controversial leak, however, is Levy's advocacy of tax aid for parochial schools.
Although he agrees that the "claim of 'double taxation' is a misnomer," he asserts that the Supreme Court "ought to relieve the burden of so called double taxation on those who pay to send their children to private school." He also says, "If proper restraints exist on the funds for parochial schools so that tax monies are not spent for religious purposes, and the aid rendered is comparable to the value of the secular education provided by the schools, fairness seems to be on the accomodationist side." To say the least, Levy's leaky wall is problematic. It is impossible that parochial school aid would not set free additional dollars for sectarian indoctrination, and the idea that, with "proper restraints," taxpayers' dollars could be secure from misuse is too good to be true.
In the course of discussing establishment-clause cases, Levy amuses his reader with some pot shots at the High Court. He says, for example, that "the Court has managed to unite those who stand at polar opposites on the results that the Court reaches: a strict separationist and zealous accommodationist are likely to agree that the Supreme Court would not recognize an establishment of religion if it took life and bit the Justices."
Levy obviously writes with passion, and his scholarship is as good as his views are controversial. Notwithstanding my disagreement with him over parochial school aid, I found his book both provoking and educational.

Argued Strongly and Successfully

This is a relatively short book by the noted legal historian and constitutional scholar Leonard Levy. Somewhat polemical in nature, this book is concerned primarily with rebutting the 'original intention' approach to the establishment clause of the First Amendment. Written originally in response to Reagan era claims that the establishment clause permitted non-preferential aid to religion, this book maintains its relevance as this claims continue to be made by a variety of conservative politicians and legal theorists. The non-preferentialist approach states that the establishment clause authorizes federal aid to religion so long as it is not preferential and specifically avoids a single church. The opposite, separationist approach, advocates the so-called "wall" between church and state with the federal government prohibited from aiding religion. Levy systemically examines the nature of religous establishments at the time of the formulation of the constitution, the attitudes of the Framers towards separation, the rationale for seperation, and the basic logic of the Bill of Rights (a subject on which Levy is an established authority). The result is a devastating critique of non-preferentialism based on original intent. Levy shows well that religous establishments in several colonies/states were plural in nature, so establishment can't refer just to favoring one religion. In line with a great deal of other scholarship, he shows that the framers were definitely separationist in orientation. With other scholars, Levy stresses that separationism was advocated by a coaltion of relatively secular intellectuals like Madison and Jefferson and a group of devout churchmen like the Baptists Isaac Backus and John Leland, all of whom felt that separation was necessary to safeguard religion. Finally, he scornfully but correctly exposes the basic weakness of arguing that the establishment clause authorizes non-preferential aid by pointing out that the basic thrust of the Bill of Rights is to constrain Federal power, not to enumerate its powers. Levy's arguments are presented well and are convincing. While non-preferentialism may one day be a viable policy, its advocates will have to search elsewhere for a constitutional justification.

The last couple of chapters of the book are devoted to related topics. Levy has an effective chapter on the inconsistencies of Supreme Court rulings on the establishment clause. He characterizes well the confusion engendered by these often unclear rulings and makes a very good point that the contradictory rulings and often poorly argued decisions are contributing factors to social discord on this issue. Part of this chapter, however, is a bit confusing because Levy wanders into a general discussion of originalist interpretation. This prefigures one of his later books but is not strictly germane to the topic of this book.

Levy also has some interesting comments on his attitude towards separation. While the logic of his arguments leads to strict separationism, he reveals himself to be a modest accomodationist with considerable respect for religion and its important place in American life.

Impressions of Plastics:Materials and Processing 3rd Edition (Paper Back)

The paperback version appears to be a photo-reproduction and not an original press run. The illustrations and photos are very poorly reproduced. The publisher should not be charging this outrageous price for such a shoddy reproduction. I'm sure the pictures and illustrations may have helped in presenting the information but most were so bad as to be more of a distraction than an aid. If this is a required text for a class try and find a hard bound copy. Hopefully the photos will be properly reproduced. As for the text itself, this book seems quite in need of a refresh for a publication date as recent as 2005.

excellent book

I have used this book as a reference and for teaching a Plastics Course in Mechanical Engineering. It is very easy to read, it does not get into too much confusing details about the chemistry - it explains the chemical fundamentals very easily. It does a great job of relating plastic structures with actual properties such as permeability, strength and conductivity. All my students consider a great book. It is one of the best written books I have encountered during my academic career. Worth its weight in gold !!

Lots of content but poor quality book

I've been reading this book as part of an engineering Masters program. It covers a wealth of topics related to plastics, but I've not been impressed at all by the quality of the book itself. The pages look as if they've been photocopied instead of printed, so much so that all the images (which are black & white only) are washed out and nearly impossible to identify. The author also chose some ridiculous pictures, including one of a plate of spaghetti (to describe amorphous plastics) and a cake. I'm pretty sure anyone reading this book already knows what spaghetti and cake look like!

Classic Text

This book is truly a classic in the power engineering field. I consider this book good for the following reasons:

a) The book covers the "bread and butter" issues that every power systems engineer would need. An outstanding example of this is the fact that the book covers protective relaying.

b)The book uses straightforward examples.

I consider this book on par with Stevenson's Power Systems Analysis book in that it is not cluttered with mathematical manipulation.

While no one can argue that computers play a bigger role in power systems computation today than they did even 10 years ago, many of the other books on my book shelf collect dust because Gross's book takes the time to go into why we are doing calculations and what they mean. It is relatively unimportant how you make calculations than what they mean and how to use them.

I have heard Dr. Charlie Gross lecture in continuing education courses at Auburn and I can attest to his skill in explaining things to students.

Avoided the Best Mistakes

Nobody's reviewed this yet? What's going on here? I've had this for many years, and I probably learned most of what I know about power systems from it. If you've tried many highly technical books, you'll REALLY understand when I say that it's just a plain, old, decent book -- does what it's supposed to do without any of it botched. He covers both equipment and connections and, e.g., positive/negative/zero sequence analytical stuff. If you're not eating beans and rice 3 times a day due to low income, this is an investment for you! By the way, Gross has long been the Square D Professor at Auburn U.

Paul Meier was wonderful. He accidently sent me the wrong version of what I ordered so he sent me the correct one and sent it to me so I could access on line and keep the wrong version! I found out he's a dialect coach and I was terrified I would not be able to learn a Scottish accent for the play I was cast in. I sent him my lines, we set a time and he helped me over Skype. He saved me! I came across very believable. My actor friends laughed hard when they heard my Scottish!

Why I love this book!

I love Standard British English Dialect for several reasons. First, even though I am not an industry professional who needs to master a multitude of dialects, I found the concise and perfectly crafted instructions to be easy to follow and completely effective! I found I was able to amaze myself with regard how little time it required on my part to grasp the concepts of how to incorporate a dialect I previously had no experience with into my speech. Who is this guy sounding so British? He looks just like me!

Second, I think we all know that the size of a book is never indicative of its quality and value. I loved that these very complete techniques were contained within an economical and time saving 26 pages! That is pure mastery, something we should all strive for.

Third, I have had so much fun with this solid dialect training tool that I cannot wait to take on yet another one. Sybil will have nothing on me before I'm done!

Great Book

This book is interesting and full of great information, this book grabs your attention until the last page. I really like how the author went about writing this book and putting it together. I am likely to buy his other titles just because I know they will most likely be very well written.
I read another reviewer recommending this book and didn't look into much information about the actual context of this book, but I'm still happy with my purchase. I thought this book would aim more along the lines of The Bedside Book of Death and discuss cases of death and sort of odd ball information dealing with death..if you're looking for that this book might be less your taste.

The most compelling antihero since a serial killer with a taste for liver, fava beans, and Chianti

I've been following the Victor the Assassin series from the first book and while I've enjoyed it immensely, I'm still at a bit of a loss as to explain its attraction. The stories themselves, while nothing original, are well-crafted and filled with suspense and action. I won't get into the specifics of this one since other reviews have already covered that ground, but it follows the formula of previous entries: Victor is hired to kill someone and must confront brainless thugs, charming psychopaths, shady government representatives, femme fatales, deadly rivals, and heavily armed former military operatives. He must plan for every contingency, prepare for all possible outcomes, and be able to improvise at a moment's notice. The plot moves along briskly, the dialogue sounds true-to-life, and the bad guys are suitably reprehensible. You won't find fault in these areas.

No, the difficulty lies in trying to clarify the strange allure of its protagonist. Victor is only ever depicted while on the job: spending hours doing surveillance, countersurveillance, studying his target, acquiring tools and weapons, plotting escape routes, sizing up opponents' strengths and weaknesses, ad infinitum. Unlike Lawrence Block's hitman Keller, who devotes his free time to collecting stamps, Victor is always in "assassin mode," so to speak. We don't know if he has any hobbies, if he enjoys fine art or classical music or noveau cuisine, or pretty much anything of substance that would add more dimension to his character. He is analogous to the Terminator, a killing machine that is continuously scanning the world around him with ruthless efficiency. He talks in a flat, even tone most of the time and the only emotions he seems to express are miniscule degrees of surprise and irritation. If it weren't for his very human dislike of cursing and littering, he might as well be a robot.

And yet Victor is a fascinating creation. We watch as he goes about his assignments and marvel over how thorough and professional he is. He manipulates everything he possibly can to his advantage and even on those rare occasions when circumstances go sideways, he is able to meet the challenge through an enviable mix of physical prowess and cognitive dexterity. Like the Hollywood version of Jason Bourne, Victor can assess a situation in the seeming blink of an eye and fashion an appropriate response. A lethal killer who never stops thinking - could there be a more potent combination?

Despite my respect for his abilities, however, I cannot say that I've ever found Victor 'likable' in the traditional sense of the word. Make no mistake: he is a sociopath, with little to no empathy for anyone. Granted, the people in his world are typically scheming low-lifes but even innocents are often met with callous indifference. As he tells one young woman, a victim of human-trafficking with whom he has struck a deal and who is considering breaking their agreement by delivering him to the men who are keeping her captive, "It's really not smart to threaten me...do not make yourself the kind of problem I don't need. I'm the worst enemy you could have." Whereas Dexter Morgan could be affable and wry and even appealing in spite of the horrible things he does, Victor is largely taciturn and off-putting; any humor he indulges in is sarcastic and deadpan, more suited for the gallows. As a result, there is almost nothing about him that I can feel a kinship with. I'm as emotionally detached from Victor as he is from the people he meets, and the only other character with whom I've felt a similar disconnect is Hannibal Lecter. Victor is like a crocodile gliding below the water's surface, a cold-blooded reptile disguising himself as a harmless piece of driftwood until he gets close enough to strike. But he is mesmerizing every step of the way, which is why the stories work so well.

This series is highly recommended for suspense/thriller fans but don't expect to get the warm and fuzzies while reading. More likely, it will feel like someone just walked across your grave.

Another Victor assassin story, another tale of what can go right and what can go wrong when you do anything. What makes the book work is that there is no good guys but everyone is shades of grey even the victims. People die when they get in the way of Victor intentionally or not. Got to say well done and thoroughly enjoyed story and fact that Victor is a character that can adapt but still tries to be who he is good or bad. Most stories fall because the author tries go in directions that don't work or make sense. Really good book worth the money, will buy next one on this ones merit.

Great Victor novel

I've liked all of the Victor series, and this is one of the best. Victor is trying to complete a contract whiile at the same time keep a step ahead of others that wish him dead. To be sure, that's the basic plot of all his adventures, but this one has some neat twists, and as usual the writing is economical and keeps things moving at a cracking pace. Backgound story of sex-trafficing is pretty harrowing.

Invaluable Holocaust testimony

This book tells the remarkable and moving story of Dr Alina Brewda, a Jewish woman doctor who survived the horrors of the Nazi occupation of Poland and the Holocaust through her innate courage and a series of astonishing miracles.

Dr Brewda was a witness to many of the events and atrocities suffered by the Jewish people before and during the Second World War.

In 1936 Alina travelled to pre-state Israel , then referred to as 'Palestine', to attend a Jewish medical conference. During her crossing to the Holy Land, Arab pogroms broke out and 22 Jews were murdered. The slaughter by Arab mobs of many more Jews caused sadness to descend on the conference and parties and receptions were cancelled.

After the Nazi invasion of Poland, where Alina lived, Alina was subjected to the most diabolical suffering and humiliations. together with millions of Polish Jews.
After that the brutal evacuation of Jews to the Warsaw Ghetto into which hundreds of thousands of Jews were packed. As the Nazis advanced eastwards the Jews from Warsaw and elsewhere in Nazi-occupied Poland were joined by Jews from eastern Poland and then from the Soviet territories. As the author describes : "They arrived by the thousands tired and grimy, they camped in the courtyards, slept on the streets and scavenged for crusts and the refuge. The hunger was so accute that children cried in agony and mothers held out lean claw like hands begging for food. Many lay in the streets, their bodies swollen through hunger."

While living under cover during the first deportations from Warsaw to the death camps, the Nazis launched their evil and diabolical campaign for the extermination of all Jewish children, in order to prevent the continuity of the Jewish race. "Alina had already seen Jewish children savagely shot in the streets. She had seen a newly born child snatched from it's mother and flung out of a sixth story window. She had seen mothers about to be taken to the umschlagplatz hide their little children in their knapsacks, and give them pills to prevent their betraying their presence by crying. She had also seen how the Germans into every knapsack to make sure no children survived".
Alina witnessed the evacuation of the children of Dr Janusz Korkzac's Jewish orphanage from where they were taken to Treblinka and gassed.
Alina escaped death at the hands of the Nazis a second time and witnessed the astonishing valour of the Warsaw ghetto uprisings, and it's horrific crushing by the German forces in which thousands of Jewish men, women and children were burned to death in flaming buildings or drowned in sewers.

When Alina was transported to Birkenau and Auschwitz she remained alive because the Nazis needed her skills as a doctor and she was appointed medical superintendent in Auschwitz' Block Ten. she secretly helped many including the hundreds of young Greek Jewish girls and did all she could to ease their suffering as they were subjected to horrific medical experiments and brutal sterilization surgery without the use of anaesthetics.

Finally Alina witnessed the gassings at Auschwitz of hundreds of thousands of Jewish men, women and children. Alina herself escaped being gassed by a series of miracles. She played a part in the underground resistance in Auschwitz and recounts the ill fated revolt of the Jewish sonderkommandos in Auschwitz.

After the liberation of Auschwitz and end of the war, Alina continued her work as a doctor among survivors, before marrying a veteran of General Anders Polish army, Simon Bialostocki, a Polish lawyer. They lived together in a charming house in north London where Alina had her surgery.

Dr Alina Brewda testified as a key witness in the defence of the author Leon Uris and his publisher during the libel case brought against them by Dr. W.A. Dering ho claimed his reputation had been destroyed by statements in Uris' novel about a "Dr. Dehring," who performed sterilization and castration experiments on Jewish prisoners in Auschwitz during World War II in his novel Exodus
