Colin Robson is a Professor in the Centres for Applied Childhood Studies and Evaluation Studies at Huddersfield University. He is chief consultant to an international project on special educational needs, statistics and indicators, at the Centre for Educational Research and Innovation, OECD, Paris.

A review of Real World Research

As the title suggests, this book is for researchers faced with 'real world' challenges like limited time, money and the need to address a presenting problem or issue. Its chapters cover everything from how to write a research proposal to getting your research published and acting on your findings. In between, the reader is offered overviews on different data collection and analysis methods covering quantitative and qualitative approaches. Pages 244-6 offer an example of a well set-out questionnaire - something that anyone who has ever sat down to design a survey has probably wished for.
Real World Research will suit people from a variety of disciplines including health, education and the social sciences who are looking for a book to guide them through the research process. Well written and easy to read, it is also comprehensive enough to suit the 'dabbler' who wants to learn about a particular methodology but doesn't want commit themselves to an entire book on the one approach.

Ick! Epitome of boring textbook.

Ick! Epitome of boring textbook. Some concepts are explained in-depth, and some not so much. Many of the approaches to research don't include enough detail to allow students to fully understand how they differ from similar approaches and require readers to find alternate sources to fill in the details. The writing style leaves a lot to be desired. It is very dry, boring reading and it is very difficult to stay focused long enough to finish a chapter.

Early one morning in 1951 a tiny blue sailboat slipped silently out of Falmouth Harbor in England. Aboard her were two young men, quietly setting out to do something that no one living had ever done before.

About the Author
Patrick Ellam was born in England, joined the army at the start of World War II then volunteered to drop alone by parachute behind the enemy lines and spent the rest of the war in the Special Operations Executive, as he described in his book Things I Remember. Then after crossing the Atlantic Ocean in Sopranino, he married June Emery and they spent 10 years in the yacht delivery business, as described in their book Wind Song. Colin Mudie was a hostage from the designer's office.

One of the Best Sea Stories Ever Written!

I happened upon this book in a trading library (as I do most of the books I read). It was tattered and all the pages were loose from the binding, but I was intrigued by the tale of two young men in a tiny boat crossing the Atlantic in the era of yachting before ammenities and electronics took over.
My boyfriend and partner/captain read it first and he was continually laughing out loud and begging to read it to me. I protested saying "You'll ruin it, if you read it out loud to me"!
The story of these two wry, guileless, enthusiastic young men is a delight for a reader that is used to reading the plodding, egocentric accounts of most sea voyage stories.
Buy this book! And try to figure out Hannibal!

I like the attitude of the songs that stick in my mind. I would have been thrilled if Hateful Hate had been in this book, but commercial artists must be careful about their image and what fans really think. I have two CDs which have seven of the songs in this songbook. I expect to find other songs on the web, but it would be unusual for me to learn all the songs in a book like this. Learning music is not rewarding at this point in my life. Hundreds of songs have been able to tell me things better than I can think for myself. I am not likely to think about "Gold Rush Wives" with letters home to Eastern sisters moaning as they read accounts of madness, childbirth, loneliness and grief. That song is not in this book, but whatever I am listening to exerts more pull on my mind that the printed word. Only a few of the 10,000 Maniacs songs create a distinct impression for me. Sheet music can be found for some songs on the web, but I was willing to risk a lot of new stuff trying to get the song Hateful Hate, which I might figure out if I try every chord of all the songs in this songbook. Many groups have a limited number of musical combinations to run through. The copyrights on these songs are owned by Christian Burial Music, ASCAP 1985, 1987, 1989, 1990 and 1992.
