It is a street that carries back the mind to the days of Wood and the Bartons, when the port of Leith was in constant communication with Bordeaux and the Garonne, and when the Scots of those days were greater claret drinkers than the English; and when commerce here was as we find it detailed in the ledger of Andrew Haliburton, the merchant of Middelburg and Conservator of Scottish Privileges there, between 1493 and 1505--a Jedger that gives great insight to the imports at Leith and elsewhere in Scotland. Journey Back in Time
By Patricia
My search for detailed descriptions of old Edinburgh ended with
this interesting book. Herein I found myself... walking cobblestones streets
sided with unique structures or peering into narrow closes crowded with interesting
folks, many who lived through a time of political upheaval and spiritual unrest.
Some found solace at St. Giles cathedral or Greyfriars Kirk.
Others, who dared defy the King and his rules, ended up wasting away in
Tolbooth prison or swinging from the gallows at the Market Cross.
So take a journey back in time, see determined faces, hear fatal cries!
