About the Author
Andrew Ritchie was born in Scotland, raised in London, and educated at Cambridge University. He has authored several standard works on historical aspect of the bicycle and cycle sport, including King of the Road and Major Taylor. He holds a PhD in the History of Sport from Strathclyde University in Glasgow, Scotland.

Early bicycle development sprang from racing

Quest For Speed: A History of Early Bicycle Racing 1868-1903 is a very highly researched, almost like a doctoral thesis in fact, argument that racing has led bicycle design. I know most bicycle riders tend to get bored with these really old bikes, but the story here is about great personalities who made developments that led to the bikes we ride now. There is a large section on the champion racer Zimmereman, worth the price just for this. Expensive and many pages yes, but give it a try and you will be entertained and educated.
