He also has some answers, and they’re not what you’d expect. Tackling evolutionary concepts from a historian’s perspective, Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind, describes human development through a framework of three not-necessarily-orthodox “Revolutions”: the Cognitive, the Agricultural, and the Scientific. His ideas are interesting and often amusing: Why have humans managed to build astonishingly large populations when other primate groups top out at 150 individuals? The Broad Sweep Of Human History

A standard history of the human race begins with Paleolithic proto-humans, traces the development of modern man or homo sapiens sapiens, then chronicles the beginnings and expansions of human civilization from agriculture to the present. Yuval Noah Harari's Sapiens follows that path, but with several intriguing twists. The result is a fascinating book which will challenge pre-conceptions and occasionally annoy or even anger the reader, but will always intrigue.

Harari focusses on the three great revolutions of human history: Cognitive, Agricultural, and Scientific. He asks how "An Animal of No Significance" managed to become the dominant life form, and whether that animal's learning to produce his own food and then to further harness the natural world to his will through science were boons or setbacks, both for that animal and for the rest of the biosphere. In 20 brilliant chapters Harari asks his readers to consider not only what did happen, but what might have occurred had things turned out slightly differently (the roles of chance and accident are given a lot of attention.) He reveals the mutually agreed upon "stories" that helped shape human societies and questions their validity, not to disillusion but to challenge his readers. At times the tone is unavoidably cynical, but at others there's a real optimistic air (leavened by some cautions here and there). I found Harari's ideas fascinating, especially those in his final chapter "The End of Homo Sapiens" and in his brief but important "Afterword: The Animal That Became a God."

Readers who are looking for detailed chronicles listing, for example, the Emperors of China, Kings and Queens of England, or Presidents of the United States should look elsewhere. But readers who want to be challenged and enlightened will find Sapiens a most enjoyable work. I'm a retired AP World History teacher, and while I was reading there were many moments which made me wish I was back in the classroom so I could share Harari's ideas with my high school students. That's high praise indeed, but Sapiens deserves it and much more.

IF YOU ARE HUMAN THIS IS A MUST READ.

This is one of the most thought provoking books I have ever read. I have a degree in history and political science and I would have been better prepared to interpret the subject matter of my chosen disciplines if I had read this book as a senior in high school. At age 74 the book has completely rearranged my cultural dogmas. Throughout the book, I kept feeling a need to challenge the author's conclusions about us humans but, in the end, I had to accept that we Sapiens are the creature Harari describes and that is more than a little unsettling. My takeaway is that I will never again think in absolutes because doing so is a recipe for fostering evil and social disaster. I will also cut cultural myths a little more slack. Maybe they do serve a human need.

Understanding humankind by the mirror of history

Excellent book, a must read. You do not have to agree with many of the points the author has made, but it surely is one of the most thought-provoking and well-written books you will find on this anthropological subject matter. Although the title says “a short history of Humankind,” it is more than a book full of historical facts. It enhances our understanding of our languages, religious, social and economic development since the cognitive revolution occurred about seventy thousand years ago.
Dr. Noah Harari describes the journey of Homo sapiens as he puts it, from being an insignificant animal minding its own business in the corner of Africa to becoming the master of the entire planet and the ultimate terror of the ecosystem. The first victim of the cognitive revolution was an extinction of other homo genus including as Neanderthals, and megafauna as they travel other parts of the world.
The author argues the most important aspect of the cognitive revolution is the fiction imagination e.g. legends, myths, gods and religions. He illustrates eloquently, “you could never convince a monkey to give you a banana by promising him limitless bananas after death in monkey heaven.” While it is true you need imagination for the belief systems; it is another matter to call brick and mortar institutions as fictions. Before the agriculture revolution, the human’s lifestyle was to be hunter gathers. The agriculture revolution brought about the domestication of plants and animals. Harari argues in many ways; the forager's life was better than the farmers. It is a hard case to make, but according to him the average farmer worked harder than the average forager, got the worst diet in return. According to him, it was the “history’s biggest fraud.” Perhaps, it is like saying that the human was better off before the scientific and industrial revolution. However, there is little doubt that the domesticated animals got the short end of the stick by the agricultural revolution.
Personally, my favorite parts were the chapters where Harari writes about the scientific and industrial revolution that started 500 years ago. The quest for knowledge catapulted the human kind from dark ages to beyond the horizons of the earth. I loved how he states, “The real test of knowledge is not whether it is true, but whether it empowers us. Scientists usually assume that no theory is 100 percent correct. Consequently, truth is a poor test for knowledge. The real test is a utility.”
Dr. Noah Harari’s describes the theory of capitalism, its appeal, and its greed in most attractive and simplistic terms. The scientific revolution itself is not devoid of any shortcomings. The revolution caused the massive extinction of plant and animals. It is to the extent that it threatens sapiens extinction. At the same time, sapiens are now on the verge of third and imminent revolution; this is genetics. The intelligent design is to replace sapiens by super humans.
I highly recommend this fascinating and thought-provoking book.

The third book in T.S. Joyce's Saw Bears series is Timberman Werebear and you know this chick did the one click and added it the day it was released! Let me tell y'all these fun loving werebears' adventures continue to keep me enthralled and excitedly waiting for the next book.

Denison "Denny" Beck and his twin brother Brighton share a sordid past. He is the easy going sexy twin while his brother never speaks and remains in the shadows. They both share a love of music and are loyal to their pack. Denny's heart was broken by the love of his life when she left without saying good bye. He never got over her and his bear pined after her for years.

Danielle Clayton left and never looked back when her relationship with Denny turned bad. She didn't wait to hear his side of the story because she never could understand why someone as handsome and perfect as Denny would want to have something to do with a bookworm like her. What could she offer him?

When Dani decides to return to Saratoga because of a job, she isn't ready to face the music or Denny for that fact. She once again leaves him hanging without waiting. When circumstances change and she needs his help as a guide for her work, she is forced to let bygones be bygones. But, she doesn't realize what the future will reveal and the secrets that Denny had kept from her!

T.S. Joyce is a remarkable and truly entertaining writer. Her alpha werebear shifters are perfect for a relaxing enjoyable evening! The combination of funny-strong male personalities and nurturing-steel-backboned females is a delight and welcomed addition to my library. I look forward to the next book. Can't wait to see what she has in store for Brighton.

Denny and Badger

The third book of the series is a reunion story that also brings in danger from Denison's past. Joyce does an excellent job of world building and character development, keeping me fully engaged til the last page and eagerly awaiting the next book. For pure enjoyment of the series, I recommend reading the series from the beginning.

Four years earlier, Danielle left suddenly, without a word. So when she shows up at his gig at a local bar and is cornered by Matt, a Grey Back, Denison steps in before he realizes who she is. "Badger" was given her nickname by the Ashe Crew because of her tenaciousness. But when she saw "Denny" with another woman just days before she was to leave for school, she ran. Now she's out of university and back for a job. Denny has no idea why she left, only that her leaving and refusing any contact since almost destroyed him. He's certain that whatever is driving her will send her running again, but then she pulls into the Asheland Mobil Park pulling an Airstream trailer and his world is once again turned upside down.

THE BADGER FINDS HER HOME !!!

Wow! I love it! Timberman Werebear is the third book in the incredible new Saw Bears series by T. S. Joyce and it is totally AWESOME! It is a standalone novel with no cliffhangers but if you're anything like me, once Joyce starts a series, you just can't stop until you've read them all. Joyce has quickly become one of my favorite authors so when she announces a new release, I can't get to my computer quickly enough to order it. And she never disappoints! Generally, I'm not one to pick favorites but every time I read one of Joyce's novels, I always think, this one is my favorite and it truly is, until she publishes her next book and then it becomes my favorite. I just can't help myself! They're all just so good! Joyce has dazzled us yet again with another example of her amazing talent and boundless imagination. The story is exciting, thrilling, compelling, heartwarming, heartbreaking, humorous, sweet, romantic, seductive, arousing and sensual. The dialog is smart, snappy, funny, well written and flows beautifully. The characters are captivating, endearing, engaging, sexy and at times, down right hilarious. This story has it all! And Joyce has expertly combined it all into a wonderful paranormal tale filled with romance, humor, suspense, heartbreaking drama, heartwarming love and a journey of hope and healing. Danielle Clayton knew she should never have come back to Saratoga. Yep, hands down, the biggest mistake and most definitely the most stupid thing she's ever done. But just having graduated college, she desperately needed a job and finding one in her field as an environmentalist was almost impossible. She had no choice, she simply had to accept this job. She should never agreed to meet her new partner at Sammy's Bar. It was just too soon and she should have known better. And there he was, on stage, singing his heart out with that beautiful voice of his, the man who broke her heart - Denison Beck! Huh? She could leave before he sees her, right? Wrong! Denison Beck and his brother were performing at Sammy's Bar just like they did every Friday night. Never in a million years would he ever have dreamed that the girl that broke his heart, the same girl his bear had claimed as his mate, the girl that had run from him without as much as a goodbye, Danielle Clayton, was right here in this bar, trying to run from him - again! What the heck? What had he ever done to deserve this heartbreak - again? Nope, so not going to happen - again! He wouldn't let her get under his skin - again. His brother Brighton had the right idea all along - no mate - ever! But his bear had bonded with Danielle three years ago and now there would never be anyone else for him. But the heart wants what the head denies! We may try to change our destiny but fate can never be denied! Can two broken hearts work through their pain, heal the scars from the past, overcome the enemies trying to destroy them and find their way back to each other? I guess you'll just have to read the book to find out. No spoilers here! But I will say this.....Handsome sexy werebears-check! Spunky, smart, beautiful human environmentalist-check! Danger, drama, action, suspense, secrets revealed and heinous enemies-check! Sweet romance, angst and a dash of beautifully written sex-you betcha! There are some super special surprises too! And of course, we get to see all our favorite characters from the Ashe Crew! I laughed! I cried! But at the end, I was happy, well entertained and very satisfied! I highly recommend reading all three books in the Saw Bear Series. You will never regret it! I'm just sayin'. Well done, T.S. Joyce, very well done! Fabulous entertainment and a great read!
