excellent (and opinionated) survey

THis is a very, very good introduction to the complexities of architecture, at about the freshman level of college. Starting with the dawn of civilization (in what is now Iraq), Glancey takes the reader on a tour of human history from the angle of what we build to worship, work, and live in. THe basics are covered extremely well, providing a context for further research.
Glancey writes with grace and clarity, dividing each major movement into regular cuts of two pages, each with brilliant images. While this format shoehorns things into categories that are a bit too sharply delineated, that kind of reductionism is a necessity in this kind of survey. In the latter part of the book, some of the distinctions appear artificial, but then we are in a period where no dominating style - you get post-modern, decontructivist, and organic, etc. - has emerged and the author had to make some decisions regarding how to put them in the format. To his credit, Glancey does not ignore the exceptions and quirks.
One thing I enjoyed about the book is that Glancey does not shy away from making strikingly loud judgements, many of which I did not share. Corbusier, he writes, "was the most inventive and poetic architect who ever lived." Now that is strong stuff and I would never have expected it in a routine survey! (While I can respect and understand what Corbusier did, I don't love it like Glancey.) But that is what makes this book more than a run of the mill overview - it adds flavor and stimulates. Also, while international, because Glancey is a Brit, much of it focuses on Britain and contemporary Europe, which provides a valuable contrast to more US-centric views.

As a freshman architecture student, this book was exactly at my level. The photographs are splendid, and the dialogue informative. This book provides a complete history of architecture in every area of the world, as well as some theory. Great for anyone truly interested in architecture, but not an expert (yet!)

Fine introduction.

I was looking for a readable inroduction to varied styles and history of architecture that was jargon free but not overly simplified. This book did the job well. Perhaps Glancey could have provided a bit more text to go along with the beautiful pictures, but he still informs.

Recommended for newcomers or those with an incomplete education in the field of architecture.

Great Reference

Though the ideals and principles of this group are unique to put it nicely, I do like the tarot card parallels and definitions provided by them in their book. The book falls apart rather easily, so be careful not to snap the binding by opening it too far. The definitions are extremely simplified, so if you are looking for an in depth meaning to any of the cards, look elsewhere. However, I use astrology and tarot together and found this to be my handy dandy reference guide when my memory fails me on a card's parallel. It's rather small, can fit nicely into a purse or bag of goodies.

The most authentic golden dawn deck around

Though I have some reservations regarding this deck's art, this deck's strength is in it's adherence to the descriptions of the golden dawn inner order deck descriptions in Book T, the initiation rituals, and Hodos Chamelionis.

Wang's deck intentional lack in certain details in the minor arcana, e.g. the astrological signs and the court cards' 'jewelery', and in it's colours, diverges from the intructions given in Book T. Having seen a few Whare Ra pips, which lack the astrological signs, possibly this divergence has some basis in previous G.D. decks.

Some of the court cards in this deck face forward. The Opening of the Key requires all court cards to face, even slightly, either left or right.

The court cards reproduced from Westcott's papers in The Golden Dawn Court Cards (Golden Dawn Studies No 5) by Darcy Kuntz conform to that demand, e.g. the princess of cups faces slightly to the right as indicated by the contour of her face and only the left ear being visible. Those drawings are in agreements with those given in "Key to Tarot divination", AFAIK written by Westcott as well (there are two notes signed S.A. - Sapere Aude was Westcott's moto).

I hope future editions of the deck would correct this issue.

this golden dawn of tarot set is great for any answers you might be looking for. it follows the Qablah and has a section in the book that explanes the Qabalah's mystical tree of life. also included in the cards is a way to get a date or time as the answer being the only deck iv ever seen with this feature. this is also one of the only decks of the later twentieth century to be approved by a member of the golden dawn

Long Time Fan!

I am a long time fan of Dame Cartland. Her books were some of the very first books I ever read. Sometimes, if you grow up with an author, you will want to revisit her books again and again....and that's what I am doing. It's been a long time since I held her books in my hands; are the stories cheesy, you bet! Are the heroines/heros simplistic? Yes again! Then why read these books? Because even though I've "grown up" in my reading, I like to visit old friends. It's very comforting to know every story will have a happy ending. Boy gets girl; love rules. Come on! It's like a hug. And at the Kindle price, I can afford to revisit this old friend!
