These wing sections, or their derivatives, continue to be the ones most commonly used for airplanes designed for both subsonic and supersonic speeds, and for helicopter rotor blades, propeller blades, and high performance fans.
Intended to be primarily a reference work for engineers and students, the book devotes over 300 pages to theoretical and experimental considerations. The theoretical treatment progresses from elementary considerations to methods used for the design of NACA low-drag airfoils. Methods and data are presented for using wingsection data to predict wing characteristics, and judiciously selected plots and cross-plots of experimental data are presented for readily useful correlation of certain simplifying assumptions made in the analyses. The chapters on theory of thin wings and airfoils are particularly valuable, as is the complete summary of the NACA's experimental observations and system of constructing families of airfoils. Mathematics has been kept to a minimum, but it is assumed that the reader has a knowledge of differential and integral calculus, and elementary mechanics.
The appendix of over 350 pages contains these tables: Basic Thickness Forms, Mean Lines, Airfoil Ordinates, and Aerodynamic Characteristics of Wing Sections.

A Classic

This is a well written book that aircraft designers and those engaged in a serious study of wing aerodynamics will find useful, helpful and handy. This is not a book for the novice but for aeronautical engineering specialists who can handle fluid dynamics theory, performance and other mathematical manipulations. Although the book has been around for some time (I first used it at university as a recommended text in aerodynamics over 25 years ago), the theory and concepts are still very much relevant and applicable today.

For those seeking advanced knowledge on wing aerodynamics theory and have a flair for mathematics especially calculus, this is an excellent reference book that is well recommended.

The classic reference book on airfoils

This should be the first book on the shelf of any serious aircraft designer. The first half of the book is a review of classic airfoil theory, including all of the pertinent formulas. It is a bit dry and definitely not a textbook, but rather a comprehensive reference manual. Most people skip the text and buy the book for the second half, which is a compilation of all the basic NACA airfoils. Each airfoil shape is exactly described and includes graphs of performance data. This is a "must have" book for anyone who wants to design airfoils, whether they are the wings of an airplane, or the fins, rudders, etc. of a sailboat.

The classical approach and text to section design

I have worn out two copies of this in my professional days, and I am doing so again with my 'hobby' copy. It is much handier that the on-line references for NACA data and for doing the 'quick flip through' when thinking about design. It is not, however, for either the mathematicall un-initiated, nor for the first-time designer. The book is both thorough and rigorous in its treatment of the topics it covers. All in all, along with the other standard texts, it supplies the needed data ad information when thinking 'I wonder if that will work...'

Hammer and Champy do a great job of detailing through the reengineering concept and process. They use understandable examples, and communicate benefits, challenges, and necessities well. A bit dry to read and get into, once I got past the beginning, this book moved along nicely.

Good Summary of the Benefits of Fresh Thinking

This book's subject is the popularized version of the business concept of management process design. Making that concept more accessible is a very useful contribution. The downside of this book is that many people have assumed that it teaches you everything you need to know to do management process design, or to reengineer key processes. That, alas, is not true. If you find the subject of process design or reengineering to be of interest, I suggest that you first read James Champy's excellent book, REEENGINEERING MANAGEMENT. That book is a good template for how to make any beneficial change in an organization, including reengineering. Then, if you want to get fired up to make major changes, use REENGINEERING THE CORPORATION as a way to create passion about the subject for yourself. But do remember, you may not even have all the processes you need, so reengineering is not the only answer. For example, what is the management process that your company uses to improve its stock market valuation? If you are like most, you do not even have an effective process for stock price enhancement. So be sure to see if you have processes where they will do you the most good.

About the Author
William McInnes is one of Australia's most popular stage and screen actors, and with the publication of his memoir A Man's Got to Have a Hobby and his novel Cricket Kings, he has become a much-loved writer too. In 2006 A Man's Got to Have a Hobby was selected as one of the Books Alive 50 Great Reads and William was named 'Australian Newcomer of the Year' at the Austraian Book Industry Awards, and in 2007 Cricket Kings was shortlisted in the 'Australian General Fiction Book of the Year' category for these awards. Great true story,amazing couple, shows how adversity brings out the best in some people. Folks who moan and groan about how life isn't fair should have a read of this to get things in perspective. I did see Sam's Australian Story on television, so definitely wanted to read about him and Jenny. One gets no negative vibes whatsoever when reading about Sam's lows, which are far outweighed by his attitude, which leads him to experience highs others will only dream about.

A review of Real World Research

As the title suggests, this book is for researchers faced with 'real world' challenges like limited time, money and the need to address a presenting problem or issue. Its chapters cover everything from how to write a research proposal to getting your research published and acting on your findings. In between, the reader is offered overviews on different data collection and analysis methods covering quantitative and qualitative approaches. Pages 244-6 offer an example of a well set-out questionnaire - something that anyone who has ever sat down to design a survey has probably wished for.
Real World Research will suit people from a variety of disciplines including health, education and the social sciences who are looking for a book to guide them through the research process. Well written and easy to read, it is also comprehensive enough to suit the 'dabbler' who wants to learn about a particular methodology but doesn't want commit themselves to an entire book on the one approach.

Ick! Epitome of boring textbook. Some concepts are explained in-depth, and some not so much. Many of the approaches to research don't include enough detail to allow students to fully understand how they differ from similar approaches and require readers to find alternate sources to fill in the details. The writing style leaves a lot to be desired. It is very dry, boring reading and it is very difficult to stay focused long enough to finish a chapter.

About the Author
Patrick Ellam was born in England, joined the army at the start of World War II then volunteered to drop alone by parachute behind the enemy lines and spent the rest of the war in the Special Operations Executive, as he described in his book Things I Remember. Then after crossing the Atlantic Ocean in Sopranino, he married June Emery and they spent 10 years in the yacht delivery business, as described in their book Wind Song. Colin Mudie was a hostage from the designer's office.

One of the Best Sea Stories Ever Written!

I happened upon this book in a trading library (as I do most of the books I read). It was tattered and all the pages were loose from the binding, but I was intrigued by the tale of two young men in a tiny boat crossing the Atlantic in the era of yachting before ammenities and electronics took over.
My boyfriend and partner/captain read it first and he was continually laughing out loud and begging to read it to me. I protested saying "You'll ruin it, if you read it out loud to me"!
The story of these two wry, guileless, enthusiastic young men is a delight for a reader that is used to reading the plodding, egocentric accounts of most sea voyage stories.
Buy this book! And try to figure out Hannibal!
