About the Author
Joseph A. DeVito received his BA from Hunter College in 1960, his MA from Temple University in 1962 and his PhD from the University of Illinois in 1964.� After receiving his PhD, he taught at Hunter College-in-the-Bronx (later Lehman College).� He has taught a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate courses, though he has concentrated on the undergraduate level and mainly on the introductory courses. He has served on the editorial boards of Quarterly Journal of Speech, Communication Monographs, Communication Education, Communication Quarterly, Journal of Communication, and Etc: A Review of General Semantics.��

Had to get for a class...

Had to get this book for a class, and I have to say - by it's own merit, this is one of the worst books I have ever seen. The writing style is incredibly long-winded, the information feels incredibly assumed, and unresearched. I don't trust this, and in one page it can tell you not to trust 'generalized words from ads such as "some people say"' and then on the next page say 'most people agree that...' I call BS on this book. If you don't have to get it, don't get it.

this is the worst book I have ever had to read for a class. I do not recommend this book. It is the wordiest, most unclear, contradictory book I have ever, to date, had to read.This book reads as if the author was trying to fill the pages with useless wordy sentences. Most of the passages could have been shortened up the make the same point with less confusion. Overall This book leaves you frustrated.

I bought this for class and it gives a lot of insight to communication. The wording is simple and easygoing to read. You aren't overwhelmed with details, but there's enough there for you to understand the subject. Great book.

I mistakenly bought this book thinking it would teach me how to write travel articles. Actually it might benefit aspiring travel writers to study the greats of the genre. This analyzes in-depth Graham Greene, Bruce Chatwin, Mary Kingsley, James Boswell, Peter Matthiessen, and V.S. Naipaul.
Along with studying them, you learn about types of travel writing (nature travel, modern psychological journey, vain travelers, Victorian women travelers). This combination of history of travel writing and literary criticism makes heavy reading but should be useful to those wondering "what was Bruce Chatwin trying to say in Songlines?"

Bittersweet But Very Good

This is an excellent set of stories focusing primarily on the relationships between nuclear family members. The stories are serious in tone and often have ambiguous endings, so if you are looking for a light read, this is not it. However, the author has a real talent for making the ordinary extraordinary, and vice versa.

The first story, "Everything a Parent Needs to Know," describes the fraught relationship between a mother and her petulant ten-year-old daughter. The mother relies heavily on modern parenting literature, and the obviously fictional quotations from books such as "Like Dogs, Like Children" (authored by "Ben Ruff"), while humorous, detract from the subtle realism of the story.

"Wooden Mum," "Dancing in the Kitchen," and I Will Never Disappoint My Children" also are about well-intentioned mothers who have difficulty forming emotional connections with their kids. "Love: Terms and Conditions" is a more optimistic take on parent-child relationships.

Fear is a theme in several stories. The elderly homeowner in "My Burglar" fears for the safety of her valuables. The child protagonist in "Bed Rest" prefers to use her imagination "for prevention rather than cure: a means of injecting myself with enough disappointment and terror to protect against a future epidemic." In "The Rescue," a father fears that his adult son may be beyond rehabilitation. In "The Countdown," another father's deepest fear is that he may kill his baby daughter.

Two stories, "Scaling Never" and "Bodies," concern children coping with the death of a family member. "Scaling Never" is particularly heartbreaking.

"Under Covers" alternates the perspective of an elderly widow with the viewpoints of the two teenage girls who are observing her. Similarly, "On the Way Home" sequentially reveals the thoughts of five strangers, each of whom is subtly connected to one or more of the others.

The protagonist of "Just in Case" is an odd, insouciant young woman who works in a luggage shop and is overly fascinated with its goods. The dollhouse in "Wooden Mum" took on special significance, and so do the bags and cases in this shop. The ending is sinister, and it's unclear how realistic the tale is meant to be.

Three stories leave realism far behind. "Sweet Home," the title story, turns the tale of Hansel and Gretel on its head. "The Ice Baby" is a Pinocchio-like tale, told from Gepetto's perspective. And "The Baby Aisle" is about a world in which family members are merchandise.

The stories in "Sweet Home" are generally interesting and beautifully told. If you enjoy reading sentences like, "Her words percolated up the tunnel of her throat, espresso-thick and strong," and "All the staples were upside down, lying like dead insects with their little legs in the air," then this is the book for you.

A great collection of stories

Sweet Home is a great collection of stories. The stories are all quite dark at times but not too dark if you know what I mean. The collection is tinged with moments of sadness. The stories tackle the themes of loss, motherhood, hope and regret and all contain an echo of pain. I really loved the way Bray uses magical realism and fairytale elements. Every story in this collection works well on its own merit and perfectly as a collection. It’s rare to find a collection of stories without at least one weak story. Some stories tugged at my heart strings including The Rescue. My favourite stories were Sweet Home, The Rescue, The Countdown, Bed Rest and The Ice Baby. I loved the others but these shone a little brighter.

Guess who came for dinner!

Great read! I'd love to see more work from Patin. This short story places its reader in the mind of Rexar the Minotaur, who makes an unlikely alliance in order to rid the world of an unspeakable evil... an uninvited houseguest. Seriously though, the story draws you in, and provides great entertainment. Excellent choice for a quick read.

MY BUSINESS, YOUR PLEASURE is the perfect short novella with a well-developed romance set in a good paranormal world.

Justin has always wanted to explore a personal relationship with his business partner and sex demon, Elliot, but he'd be breaking his own rule of no messing with immortals. Justin decides to have a one night stand with any immortal to attempt to work out his attraction, but Elliot learns of his plans and shows up at the club. Elliot uses every trick in his seduction arsenal to convince Justin they should be partners in more ways than just business.

I loved this novella. Justin and Elliot are complete characters and I could see their attraction to each other. It's rare that an erotic novella manages to simultaneously build an emotional connection between the leads but this novella does it. The novella wisely had Justin and Elliot know each other well before the night their relationship changes so the romance develops in believable ways. I especially liked that Elliot is so open about his feelings for Justin and how he uses sex to show Justin. Justin's rule of not having a relationship with immortals is the perfect tension to keep the men apart initially and I really liked how this unfolds.

The other great thing about this novella is that it's set in a strong paranormal world but it doesn't overwhelm the romance. Elliot is a sex demon and how this plays into who he is and his relationship with Justin is all integrated so well. I like this world of immortals so well that I hope the author continues to set novellas in it.

MY BUSINESS, YOUR PLEASURE is a wonderful romance I highly recommend to MM readers.
